Fostering True Happiness

The Huichol foundation stems from the dreams and vision of Don José Matsuwa, the world renowned Huichol shaman, who co-founded the Dance of the Deer Foundation (our parent organization) alongside Brant Secunda. Following an arduous 12-year apprenticeship with Don José, Brant became his close companion and friend. Don José’s aspirations have been the continiuing driving force behind the Huichol Foundation.

Don José and the Huichol people in general are famous for their laughter, joy and heart warming smiles. They are such a proud people. Our goals is to empower that happiness and foster their cultural heritage in order for the natural happiness to grow within each Huichol child, adult and elder.

One of our goals is to ensure that every huichol family has a roof to sleep under; a place to call home. The Roof Fund helps to build and fix the traditional Huichol huts, which have been the people’s accustomed form of shelter for thousands of years. Simple thatched grass roofs, wooden beams and clay is all that is required to create shelter from the torrential downpours and intense sun, which bless the rugged Huichol landscape.

The Huichol Foundation is working to raise funds for the new Huichol Cultural school. This school will offer educational programs to teach the youth within the tribe about their ancient heritage. Elders from a number of villages will teach numerous aspects of the culture, from traditional ceremonies and artistry to mythology and huichol language studies.
